The following list includes student members appointed for the
2008-2009 academic year.
University Information
Technology Council
The UITC will provide advice and counsel regarding University
Information technology strategies to the Office of Information
Technology (OIT), and through OIT to the Office of the Provost and
the Office of the President. The most important principle
guiding UITC activities is to ensure that IT activities and
initiatives are closely aligned with the highest academic and
business priorities of the University. The

Academic Responsibility Committee
This committee will consider hearing appeals of cases decided in
college academic responsibility committees when either party to the
case formally appeals on the grounds that (a) the decision was
contrary to the evidence; (b) the sanction imposed is unreasonable,
unjust, or inappropriate; or (c) the hearing procedures were
violated. The committee will also review the Code of Student
Responsibility and propose changes to the Faculty Senate.

The Michael J. Mungo Distinguished Professor of the Year Award
Committee
The committee recommends to the President the
name of a faculty member to be considered for the Michael J. Mungo
Distinguished Professor of the Year Award, given for outstanding
teaching at the undergraduate level. The Chair of
this committee is:

Athletic Advisory
Committee
The committee shall consider those issues concerning the athletic
policies of the University that are referred to the committee by the
Student Senate, Faculty Senate, Director of Athletics, President,
and/or the Board of Trustees. The chair will communicate the
recommendations of the committee concerning such issues to the
President and the organization or group submitting the issue for
consideration. The committee will be attentive to the need for
ensuring that proper academic standards are maintained by all
student athletes. The chair, acting on behalf of the committee,
will request appropriate and relevant information regarding the
academic eligibility and progress of student athletes. The Chair of

The purpose of this committee is to select the most outstanding
male and female senior to receive the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
Award. Another such award is given to the most outstanding alumnus,
but the Vice President for Development selects this candidate. The

Advisory Committee
The committee advises and makes
recommendations to the President of the University on issues related
to the PE Center. The Chair of
this committee is:

Curricula and
Courses Committee
The committee shall consider and recommend to the faculty action
on all requests for new or revised curricula leading to any formal
recognition other than graduate degrees of first professional
degrees in Law and Medicine. The committee shall also consider and
recommend to the faculty action on all requests for the institution,
modification, or deletion of courses and of any prescribed programs
of study which do not fall within the purview of the graduate
faculty. The committee shall review the various curricula of the
University with special attention to duplication or obsolescence of

Disability Affairs Committee
The purpose of this committee is to advise the Vice President of
Student and Alumni Services on problems related to physically
disabled students. In particular, the committee will: (1) Keep
under continuing review policies and procedures concerning disabled
students at the University and make recommendations as appropriate;
(2) Receive from disabled students reports of and suggestions for,
alleviating difficulties which they are experiencing; (3) Maintain
liaison with non-University groups dealing with the problems of
disabled students, such as the State Vocational Rehabilitation
Department and the Commission for the Blind; and (4) Periodically
visit University facilities and grounds and make recommendations
which would facilitate the life of disabled students at the

Advisory Committee
This committee will: (1) Keep under continuing review policies
and plans for the University Health Services and make appropriate
recommendations to the Vice President of Student and Alumni Services
and the Director of Health Services; (2) When appropriate,
consider and investigate complaints regarding the Health Services;
(3) Study and make appropriate recommendations regarding health
education programs for University studies; and (4) Provide
coordination among different campus groups interested in University
Health Services and Health Education Programs. The Chair of this

Committee
This committee shall make recommendations to the President and
Board of Trustees for the recipients of all honorary degrees from
the University. The Chair of this committee is:

Restoration Committee
The purpose of this committee is to insure the historical beauty
of the Horseshoe area. The committee will make recommendations on
how to maintain or better its appearance. The Chair of this

Committee
This committee shall advise the faculty and administration on
matters pertaining to the improvement of teaching within the context
of the research university. This committee shall initiate studies
and make recommendations to the faculty and administration on
programs that will enhance the practice and status of teaching at
the University of South Carolina. The Chair of this committee is:

This committee will review the problems that

Orientation Committee
This committee will review the orientation program for new
students and make recommendations concerning orientation policies

Outstanding Faculty/Staff
Advisor Award Committee (Ada B. Thomas)
The committee selects both faculty and staff
recipients of the Ada B. Thomas Advising Award from submissions made
from the student body and other members of the USC-Columbia
faculty/staff community. The

Outstanding Freshman Advocate
Committee
This committee consists of three Freshman Council members
selected each fall to serve two-year terms. The committee
selects the winner of the University's annual Outstanding Freshman
Advocate Award. The Co-Chairs of this committee are:

Parking and Transit Authority Advisory
Committee
The purpose of the Parking Committee is to consider both short
term and long range problems dealing with parking and make
recommendations concerning their solutions. The Chair of this

Registration Committee
This committee will monitor and review the organization of the
registration system at the University and recommend changes to the
Administration in an attempt to meet the needs of the University
community. The Chair of this committee is:

Religious Affairs
Committee
The purpose of this committee will be to oversee the religious
life program on campus and to make such recommendations to the
President as may be appropriate. Among the specific objectives of
this committee are the following:
1. Make recommendations to the President on formal petitions
for recognition of campus religious workers submitted by
denominations, religions, and other religious groups.
2. Receive annual reports from recognized religious workers on
campus and publish the list of such workers annually.
3. Receive complaints concerning recognized religious workers,
determine if the University regulations have been violated, and
recommend remedial or other disciplinary actions, including
revocation of recognition, if required.

Retention Committee
The purpose of the Retention Committee is to
provide campus leadership in the study and promotion of student
retention, progression, academic success, and degree completion at
the University of South Carolina's Columbia campus. The Chair of this committee is:

Safety Committee
The University Safety Committee exists to address any security
concerns that may arise in the University community, including but
not limited to residence life, lighting, and safety education. By
pooling resources from the faculty, administrative staff, and
students, the committee will develop cohesive policies that will
make USC a safer place to be. The Chair of this committee is:

Scholastic Standards and
Petitions Committee
This committee shall consider matters concerning
University academic requirements and standards. The committee
will also review current policies and practices and proposed changes
of the colleges and make recommendations to the appropriate college
faculty or to the Faculty Senate. The Chair of this committee

South Carolina Honor College
Policy Committee (SCHC)
The Pollicy Committee must approve all changes
to the rules contained in the SCHC Handbook (Nandbook for Students
and Advisors). Additionally, the Dean may seek the advice of
the Policy Committee on other matters pertaining to the general
operations of the Honors College. The Chair of this committee is:

Student Publications and
Communications, Board of
The Board is to ensure the maintenance of the highest standards
in the operation of student media. In this regard, the Board has
responsibility for handling grievances relating to the student
media. The budgets and expenditures of such media are also overseen
by the Board. The major executives of the student media are
appointed by the Board. The Contact for this committee

Scholarship and Financial Aid
Committee
The committee oversees the policies associated with
general University scholarships. It also hears reports from
the financial aid staff on all phases of financial aid
administration. The committee delegates subcommittees to hear
student appeals. These appeals are generally associated with
student athlete grant-in-aid eligibility as required by the NCAA, as
well as those from students who are failing to meet the University's
policy for maintaining satisfactory academic progress for financial
aid eligibility. The Chair of this committee is:

This committee is an entity of the USC Board of Trustees, and
exists as a forum to provide for the interaction of members of the
Board of Trustees and the students on the committee on behalf of the
student body. The chair of this committee is: Rita

Parking Appellate Court
The purpose of the Traffic Appellate Court is
to hear appeals from persons receiving campus traffic tickets.

Women's Studies Committee
This committee administers the Women's Studies Program at the
University. In particular, the committee staffs and supervises the
University 111 and 112 classes, besides planning programs dealing
with women's studies and working with professionals related to the
field.
