Majoring
in International Studies with a double minor in Environmental Studies
and French, I am honored to represent the University of South Carolina
as Student Body President for the 2008-2009 school year. Throughout my
life I have committed myself to serving others through my love,
dedication, and passion for making a positive difference. Currently, I
live in Parker, Colorado, but have lived across the United States, in
both Atlanta, Georgia and my birthplace Chicago, Illinois. As a member
of the Carolina Community, I have worked to experience the great
opportunities this university has to offer. In the spring of 2008, I led
the Alternative Spring Break Program to Washington, DC working with
Hunger and Homelessness in the inner city. This was my forth alternative
service trip after traveling to Biloxi, Mississippi bringing relief to
victims of Hurricane Katrina, West Virginia assisting low income
residents with housing, and John’s Island, SC building homes through
Habitat for Humanity program. I have found my niche here at USC through
my involvement in not only academics, but the extra curricular
activities offer here at Carolina. Serving on Carolina Service Council,
as Secretary of athletic affairs for Student Government, a University
Ambassador helping prospective students and their families learn about
the numerous opportunities for educational and personal growth offered
at Carolina and one of my most fulfilling experiences, study abroad, I
have truly engaged myself within this community. In the spring and
summer of 2007 I studied abroad in Senegal. During this time I studied
French, Wolof, African economic and environmental development,
education, and anthropology while in addition I volunteered at a local
elementary school. While living with a Senegalese family and working
with the local children, I immersed myself in Senegalese culture,
language, and traditions. In the summer of 2007, I continued my study
through an internship with Action Humaine pour le Développement Intégré
au Sénégal (AHDIS), a local NGO, researching strategies for the progress
of women, education, local government, and sustainable economic
development. These were amazing experiences which I will forever be
grateful. In the future, after graduation I hope to win a Fulbright
grant, which will enable me to research forestry policies and economic
growth in Uganda. I plan to continue my education after graduation and
further research in graduate school and law school. I will study in the
fields of International Political Economy and African Studies with the
ultimate intention to obtain an International Corporate Law Degree. I
look forward to a great year here at Carolina working with all students
to create positive change for our students and this campus.
